breathe: 10.07.05
this track came together very slowly over the course of 2 days. i really love the flow of string lines, and how they swell into one another. originally the structure was verse chorus verse etc. i decided however that i wanted to make it a bit more challenging to the listener, so i changed it around to the current version which i prefer. the intro was written with the begining of the album very much in mind.

i feel disease: 30.03.05
i love how this track is quite sparse, with very few parts going on. i've always been fond of the "less is more" theory. i blame kraftwerk. the vocal melody is one of my favourites on the album; it just pours out nicely. the trance-like feel to the arrangment i really like alot.

black and blue: 02.05.04
i remember it being late at night when i was writting this. singing over a bass and drum track only, the entire song came out in one hit. i went back to change a couple of lyrics but that was all. this track carved a sound for the rest of the album. once again a very trance like feel that really works in contrast to the big drums and bass.

witness: 31.03.05
this track was written very quickly. i remember writing the chorus, and being knocked out by it. its simple and incredibly effective. alot of the arrangments here were influenced by kraftwerk and haujobb, i just added the ANGELTHEORY type strings ontop.  the differing vocal apporaches work together extremely well.

possession: 11.07.04
this was written more from a "feeling" rather than from a musical idea. the tone is desperation, urgency, and loss. the precussion on this track is one i love very much, it fills out the track, without making it sound too busy. i was really influenced in my approach vocally by trent reznor with this one. easily one of my favorites on this album.

lost: 16.06.05
it was a very humid sunday morning in minneapolis, i could feel the heaviness of the air in my room.
i was neither there, nor was i breathing.

no frequency: 17.02.05
when i heard the original of this track from terrorfakt's "cold steel world" album, instantly i could hear vocals over the instrumental track. i contacted ben and asked if i could work with it. quite late one night i was lying in bed, thinking about the music, and the melody "no frequency this urgency no frequency" came to mind. i jumped out of bed and wrote it down. the following morning i wrote the music around the chorus idea.  the original samples i worked with were just brilliant.

human: 27.07.05
this was the final track  written for the album. intentionally for the first time i wrote something that would fit the album, rather than going off in an unknown direction. usually i shy aware from that idea. inspiration for this track came from the realization that "i can only do what i can, at that moment in time" admitting to yourself that you have limits is an intersting experience.

descendant: 12.06.04
i wrote this track intentionally as an instrumental. i wanted to achieve something that justified not having the need for vocals. i love how the "chorus" has those voices doing the counter melody whilst the main riff is incredibly simple. i wrote many tracks like this back the mid 80s

come with me: 18.12.04
this was the most difficult of tracks to write. i was going through the longest drought creatively. once it was finished it took me days to believe that it was good enough to stand beside the material already written. slowly it grew on me more and more. once i had the mix just where i wanted it, i knew i had created one of my favorite ANGELTHEORY tracks thus far.

re-possession: 12.12.03
this was the first track written for the album. its one of those tracks which again for me pointed the direction and feeling. the album should take. the strings are errie in places, giving off a thick atmosphere. i wrote the vocals quite quickly, and then proceeded to turn these two ideas into a song.  i wanted to avoid using a chorus, as i felt the music itself was enough to keep the listener interested. some of the vocals on the final track are from the original first take as i really loved the tone and feeling in my voice. the vocal sample is from one of my favorite sci-fi dramas, "space 1999".

horizon: 19.06.05
modern technology lets us do strange things, this track was written entirely in my parents kitchen.
originally i wrote this as an instrumental track. i wasnt really sure about what i trying to achieve with it, but i really loved the overall vibe of the track. once i finished mixing it i began to hear a vocal melody over the top and i proceeded to record the vocals. i knew straight away this track would close the album because of it's dramatic ending.

as a completed "body of work" this album was incredibly difficult to write. firstly not wanting to repeat myself musically is something im very cautious about, and very rarely will i do that as i did with "human". but the decision to keep the "mood" of album musically consistant was far more important to me at that point. secondly 2 tours and relocating countries myself twice didn't help matters. but im thankful for the experiences as alot inspiration came from them.

i love how this album feels heavier and solid; solid from the point that all the tracks have a similar vibe to them whilst being different in ideas and approach.

sonically it goes exactley where i wanted it to go. vocally im really happy with my different approaches and how im begining to work them into each track. the drums dominate the mixing and take up alot of space in the final sound. the strings are quite haunting in places which gives off incredible atmosphere and bleekness. why go half way?
